Submersible pumps are generally very reliable when it comes to properly flush and emptying the toilet, but some can be killed quickly! To extend the life of the pump, some things need to be disposed of individually.

If you are renovating or repairing your property, there is a good chance that you need to get rid of excess water from a particular area. Submersible pumps can be life-threatening because they can move unwanted liquids from one area to another. The submersible pump works like a centrifugal pump but is connected to an electric motor. All you have to do is keep the pump in the water and the submersible pump will stay there until the work is done. Equipped with a special motor that keeps out water, there is no risk of water damage and the chances of electrocution are greatly reduced, making it safe and reliable.

Some Causes Of Submersible Pumps

Wet wipes

Wipes are made of fibers that pull threads when soaked in water. These fibers can easily get entangled in the rotating parts of the pump and accumulate over time until the pump fails, causing a serious blockage. These wipes may include:

  • Diaper wipe
  • Antibacterial wipe
  • Wet wipes
  • Makeup remover pad
  • Disinfectant wipe

Biodegradable wipes can also cause pump problems, so it is generally advisable not to dispose of them with a water pump.

Latex Item

Latex material is very strong and non-biodegradable. Latex is insoluble in water and can easily clog the impeller with both standard vortex pumps and grinder/chopper-driven pumps, which can quickly lead to pump failure. Wrapping latex items with toilet paper is useless as the paper can melt and the latex items can get entangled in the pump. Therefore, if you need to dispose of items such as latex gloves or condoms, you need to wrap them in toilet paper and put them in the appropriate trash can.

Floss

The Floss is designed to be extremely durable despite its light and thin feel and will not break underwater. As a result, a certain length of floss can get caught in the rotating parts of the grinder or standard pump, reducing efficiency and eventually failing.

Problem Prevention

The only way to eliminate the problems caused by non-minable items like the one above is to not throw them into the bathroom. Provide a discreet sign in your home’s appropriate bathroom trash can to advise visitors not to throw certain items into the bathroom. If you run your business in public or staff toilets, have a marked trash can and invest in appropriate signs located behind the cabin door and near the sink for non-compostable items. Indicate how to dispose of it.
